FDA authorizes generic New World screwworm drug for cattle

Ranchers have another option to help prevent New World screwworm infestations in cattle.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) Aug. 27 for Bimectin (ivermectin) injection.

Bimectin injection is a generic drug authorized for the prevention of New World screwworm myiasis in cattle when administered within 24 hours of birth, at the time of castration or when a wound first appears.

“By authorizing both generic and pioneer products, the agency is ensuring producers aren’t dependent on a single manufacturer or product to protect their herds,” said Timothy Schell, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Bimectin injection is a generic version of Ivomec, which the FDA authorized in February for the prevention of NWS myiasis in cattle. Bimectin was previously approved for the treatment and control of various parasites in cattle.

The new EUA applies only to Bimectin injection and does not authorize other dosage forms of the drug.

Cattle producers should carefully follow the product labeling and FDA fact sheet when using Bimectin injection. The drug is available over the counter without a prescription.

A 35-day slaughter withdrawal period is required.

Bimectin injection is not authorized for use in lactating dairy cows or calves that will be processed for veal.
